PM Narendra Modi Launches 5G Services in India


Fifth generation wireless telecom technology boasts internet speeds several times faster than 4G with seamless, lag-free connectivity for billions of devices in real time, set to transform various sectors such as health care, education and agriculture.

At India Mobile Congress 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled 5G services in specific cities as a first step toward ushering in a new era.

Reliance Jio

Reliance Jio has quickly established itself as an industry disruptor since entering wireless in 2016. Since its introduction, millions more Indians can affordably get online with its 4G network; forcing rivals such as Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (before their merger) to rethink their prices in response.

The Jio Phone was one of the most highly anticipated smartphone launches in India. PM Modi announced telecom services for India during Pragati Maidan’s sixth edition of India Mobile Congress at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi. Joining him were Reliance Jio chairman Mukesh Ambani, Bharti Airtel chief Sunil Mittal and Vodafone Idea (formerly Vodafone India) CEO Kumar Mangalam Birla.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed the need for India to adopt a digital-first strategy at this launch event. He noted how fast-tracked development is taking place under his administration, with notable successes being seen across key sectors including energy, connectivity and digital payments. Furthermore, major strides had been made toward fifth generation wireless technology – with India soon having some of the lowest data charges worldwide.

PM Modi witnessed an impressive demonstration of augmented and virtual reality applications that will benefit the masses. A student from Dankaur, Uttar Pradesh appeared through a hologram to tell him about how an immersive education experience allowed her to learn about solar systems. Later, he visited pavilions set up by various telecom operators for hands-on experience of 5G services; drones were being used for precision farming while high security routers secured data; sewer monitoring systems could also be seen at work in addition to demonstrations showcasing how workers in an under construction tunnel can be monitored remotely via VR/AI monitoring methods ensuring worker safety during construction using VR/AI monitoring technologies.

Vodafone Idea

Vodafone Idea’s merger led to one of the world’s largest telecom companies – Vodafone Idea – becoming one of the world’s largest telcos. Now known as Vi, this new entity provides customers with numerous plans and benefits tailored to them; customers have their choice of plans and recharge options available to them; additionally they also provide postpaid connections including family plans.

Recently, Airtel raised its tariffs, citing the need to clear away some of its debt to both government agencies and tower companies. This move comes shortly after the Supreme Court upheld government efforts to recover billions in dues from telecom companies. Airtel estimates it will take 10 years to clear their debt, while still investing heavily in their network.
